The craft of the Sanadiki (chest maker) is a traditional woodworking trade in Damascus, involving the creation of wooden chests as well as related furnishings and household items. The term also applies to artisans who work with mother-of-pearl, inlaying it into cabinets, furniture, and chests.

In this sense, the designation “Sanadiki” signifies more than just the production of a wooden chest as a storage vessel; it encompasses a broader range of domestic crafts linked to the furnishing and outfitting of Damascene homes, as well as decorative and material traditions involving both wood and mother-of-pearl.

While fieldwork indicates that “carpenter” is the common term used today, “Sanadiki” remains the more precise designation for this specialised traditional craft focused on the production of chests, small cabinets, wardrobes, and wooden accessories such as our Sukayna hangbags.
