Tailoring is a craft that lies at the heart of daily life, as it is concerned with clothing; it is a deeply personal craft.

In the Levant, a tailor does not simply sell ready-made fabric or produce a standardised garment meant to fit everyone; rather, they craft a piece that aligns with the wearer’s body measurements, personal preferences, the nature of the occasion, and prevailing social tastes. This is where the craft’s unique character emerges, blending technical skill and aesthetic sensibility with a precise understanding of the nuances distinguishing different body types, fabrics, and intended uses.

The Dictionary of Levantine Industries defines the tailor as one who cuts fabric to create various garments according to people’s preferences; using shears to shape the material to fit the contours of the body, then joins the pieces together with precise stitching, securing and fastening them in a manner suited to the specific type of garment.

This definition positions the tailor as an intermediary between fabric and the body: fabric is a flat material, whereas the body is defined by volume, movement, and curves. The tailor’s task is to transform that flat surface into a wearable, comfortable, and expertly crafted garment that befits the wearer’s station.

We work closely with selected tailors in Damascus who have been in the trade for decades to identify the best materials and design abayas that feature comfort, good fit and longevity.
